Eight of your own have been nominated to suit up against Spanish giants, Real Madrid, later this Summer. Major League Soccer’s All-Stars will face Los Blancos at Soldier Field in Chicago on August 2.
Philadelphia Union fans, the time has come to perform your civic duty as supporters and vote for some of your very own whom have been nominated on this year’s Major League Soccer All-Star Team ballot.
Voting commenced on Tuesday when MLS released the official ballot of 176 players. Thanks to a brand-new policy adopted by the league, eight players from each team were ultimately nominated to the ballot.
For fans there are several familiar names –– eight to be exact –– among the nearly 200 listed on this year’s ticket.
Union shot-stopper Andre Blake could be headed to Soldier Field in Chicago and his second straight All-Star game, should he win the Fan Vote and notch his name on the team sheet versus Los Blancos.
Also nominated from the backline are Fabinho and Oguchi Oneywu. For the aging defenders, this could very well be their last shot at playing in an MLS All-Star game, as well as their only chance at suiting up against Cristiano Ronaldo and Co.
There are a bevy of Union midfielders nominated and rightly so. Among the list of adept Union midfielders is Derrick Jones, the United States Under-20 international and midfield engine referred to by some as the poor mans’ N’golo Kante.
A tandem of Haris Medunjanin and Derrick Jones has been made possible this Summer, thanks to the designation of the Bosnia and Herzegovina international to the card. Medunjanin has shown his class on and off the field this season, which has rightfully landed him a spot on this year’s ballot.
Versatile, veteran midfielder Chris Pontius is also on the ticket. Party Boy’s six assists on the year have him currently tied for third in the league in assists and primed for a trip to the Windy City.
Lest we forget Union captain, Alejandro Bedoya, who has come into his own as of late and shown why he is more than equipped to lace up against European competition again later this Summer.
Rounding out the list of Union players nominated is lone forward, CJ Sapong. With eight goals to his name thus far, CJ Sapong has become one of the first names on Jim Curtin’s team sheet. Perhaps he will be for whomever manages this year’s All-Star XI.
Voting will continue through the MLS app and the EA SPORTS™ “More Than a Vote” Challenge until Saturday June 3.
Fans can then cast their vote for Union players to the Fan XI via online ballot on MLSsoccer.com starting on June 3 at 10 a.m. ET. Voting will cease on June 30.
